Cretaceous Age 100.5 - 66 million years old.
Raptors were carnivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100.5 to 66 million years ago. The first remains of this species were discovered by Peter Kaisen in the Gobi Desert on August 11, 1923. A year later, it was officially named Velociraptor, derived from the Latin words velox (meaning “swift”) and raptor (meaning “thief” or “robber”).
While Velociraptors have gained widespread fame through their portrayal in the Jurassic Park film series, scientists note that the movie version bears little resemblance to the real dinosaur. The creatures shown on screen were actually modeled after Deinonychus, a larger relative of Velociraptor. In reality, true Velociraptors were much smaller—about the size of a turkey—with feathers covering their bodies. They were not the man-sized, scaly predators seen in the films. On average, a Velociraptor weighed around 30 pounds and stood just over 3 feet tall.
Contrary to cinematic depictions, paleontological evidence suggests these theropods possessed considerably more modest locomotor capabilities than Hollywood suggested. Current scientific consensus estimates maximum running velocities of approximately 40 miles per hour—substantially below contemporary apex predators such as cheetahs (60 mph) and lions (50 mph), though markedly superior to human sprint performance (28 mph). This evidence-based assessment provides valuable context for understanding theropod predatory ecology and behavioral adaptations within Cretaceous ecosystems.
Recent research suggests that Velociraptor likely hunted and scavenged small animals. Its diet probably included reptiles, small mammals, insects, and smaller dinosaurs. Although movies often depict it as an aggressive hunter, it was probably more of a scavenger than a hunter.
