Morocops Ovatus

Trilobites were an extinct group of marine arthropods that belonged to the class Trilobita and are recognized as one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record around 521 million years ago, marking the beginning of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period. These hard-shelled, segmented creatures inhabited Earth’s ancient seas and are considered among the planet’s earliest complex life forms. As iconic representatives of the Paleozoic Era, trilobites disappeared long before the age of dinosaurs.

One of the most remarkable features of trilobites was their exoskeleton, the first known skeletal structure in animals, which made them particularly easy to fossilize. Their bodies were divided lengthwise into three distinct lobes: a central axial lobe flanked by two symmetrical pleural lobes, a characteristic that gives them the name trilobite, meaning “three-lobed.”

Morphologically, the trilobite body was organized into three primary sections. The cephalon, or head, contained compound eyes, mouthparts, and sensory organs such as antennae, allowing them to sense and interact with their environment. The thorax, forming the middle section, consisted of multiple overlapping segments—ranging from two to sixty-one—that provided flexibility and facilitated movement. At the rear, the pygidium, or tail section, comprised fused segments that offered stability and protection. Together, these features made trilobites highly adaptable inhabitants of ancient marine ecosystems and left an extensive fossil legacy for modern science to study.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
