Gastrolith stones identified in the Cloverly Formation are actually polished stomach stones from large dinosaurs, particularly Sauropods such as Titanosaurs. These beautiful, rare stones, called gastroliths, are found in only a few locations in Southern Montana. Verifying a sauropod gastrolith requires detailed scientific validation: the stone must originate from a different geological formation than the dinosaur's environment to confirm it wasn't naturally part of that site. Genuine gastroliths exhibit distinctive smoothing and polishing from tumbling in the digestive tract, similar to rock polishing. Crucially, the specimen must be discovered directly alongside dinosaur bones to rule out other explanations, such as water or wind erosion. Without this contextual evidence linking the stone to the skeleton, even well-polished specimens remain scientifically uncertain. This 2.8-inch specimen meets all these rigorous standards and comes with documentation that proves its origin and its connection to sauropod remains.
