Elrathia Kingi Trilobite

Trilobites are extinct marine arthropods from the class Trilobita, among the first complex animals in Earth’s history. They appeared around 521 million years ago during the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian and lived in the oceans long before dinosaurs evolved. Their hard shells made them some of the earliest animals to develop a skeleton (exoskeleton), which fossilized exceptionally well.

The term “trilobite” refers to their three-lobed body plan: a central axial lobe flanked by two pleural lobes. Their bodies are divided into three main sections:

  1. Cephalon (head): With eyes, antennae, and mouthparts.

  2. Thorax (middle): Contains 2–61 segments that overlap for flexibility.

  3. Pygidium (tail): Fused segments forming the end of the body.

Trilobites are iconic fossils, often used to teach students about early life forms and Paleozoic marine ecosystems.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under immense pressure can be rough. Rarely does a fossil emerge intact and perfect. Most fossils require some restoration, and some are even modified by humans to improve their display. In the United States, workers do a highly professional job of excavating and preserving these natural treasures.
