Cretaceous Age 83-70 Million Years Old.

Name: Maiasaura

Type: Herbivore

Size: 9 meters in length.

Millions of years ago, herds of Maiasaura roamed the plains of what is now western North America. This large duck-billed dinosaur lived during the final stages of the Cretaceous period and is best known from fossils discovered in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau. The discovery of a massive nesting site in 1978 revealed a rare glimpse into dinosaur family life, showing that these animals likely nested in colonies and cared for their young.

Maiasaura had a wide, toothless beak ideal for clipping vegetation, supported by jaws filled with hundreds of teeth that worked together to grind tough plants. A small crest between the eyes and a long tail added to its characteristic appearance. Its body was built for versatility, with powerful hind legs for walking upright and shorter forelimbs that allowed comfortable movement on all fours.

Growing quickly and reaching adult size in just seven to eight years, Maiasaura could grow up to eight meters long and weigh around four metric tons. These traits, combined with evidence of social nesting behavior, make it one of the most important dinosaurs for understanding life in Late Cretaceous ecosystems.
