Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years old.
Majungasaurus was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur that lived during the final stages of the Late Cretaceous period, around 70 to 66 million years ago, on the island of Madagascar. As a member of the Abelisaurid family, this predator was recognized for its short, deep skull and reduced forelimbs, features common among southern hemisphere meat-eating dinosaurs. Growing to approximately 6 meters in length and weighing close to one tonne, Majungasaurus was one of the dominant predators in its ecosystem. Its strong jaws and backward-curved, serrated teeth were adapted for slicing flesh and holding onto prey. Fossils discovered near Mahajanga have made Majungasaurus one of the most thoroughly studied abelisaurids, helping scientists better understand dinosaur evolution in isolated environments such as Madagascar.
