March Fly Insect

This remarkable specimen originates from Fossil Lake, a 50-million-year-old freshwater ecosystem that once covered southwestern Wyoming. Of the original 930 square miles, approximately 500 square miles of sediment have survived, with the most productive 230-square-mile central zone yielding extraordinary fossil concentrations. The lake's unique chemical composition created ideal preservation conditions, preventing decomposition and allowing delicate limestone layers to accumulate gradually. These laminated deposits contain the world's richest assemblage of fossilized fish, alongside a complete aquatic community featuring plants, insects, crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and early mammals, including the earliest pantolestid. The surrounding subtropical landscape is equally well-documented through rare terrestrial fossils—horses, snakes, lizards, bats, and over 325 plant varieties. Excavations beginning in the 1870s have consistently revealed exquisitely preserved specimens that collectively paint an unmatched portrait of Paleogene freshwater lake life. Your March fly specimen represents a precious window into this ancient world, offering collectors and paleontologists alike an authentic connection to Earth's distant past.
