Ocean Jasper is a striking, multicolored stone from Madagascar, known for its unique spherical patterns. Often referred to as an orbicular jasper, recent studies indicate that it is primarily composed of chalcedony, a variety of quartz. Some specimens feature agate banding or drusy coatings of tiny clear quartz crystals, commonly called “druzy.”
Chalcedony, the mother stone of many semi-precious gems, forms the basis of agate (banded chalcedony), carnelian (red chalcedony), and onyx (black chalcedony). Ocean Jasper’s ability to transmit light is a hallmark of chalcedony, unlike true jasper, which is typically opaque and only becomes translucent when cut extremely thin.
