Celestite (also known as Celestine) is a mineral composed of strontium sulfate, named for its occasional delicate blue color. It occurs as crystals, as well as in compact, massive, and fibrous forms. Celestite is typically found in sedimentary rocks and is often associated with gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. While it occurs worldwide, it is usually found in small quantities. Madagascar is famous for its pale blue crystal specimens.
The notable Madagascar locality, discovered in 1967, produces around 15 tons of celestite annually. It is located near the village of Sakoany on the western banks of the Betsiboka River. The celestine-bearing layer forms a lens up to 30 meters thick, sandwiched between crinoidal limestones and sandy greywacke from the end of the Cretaceous. Mining involves digging shafts up to 15 meters (50 feet) deep to access the deposits. Celestite occurs mainly in two forms: geodes up to 60 cm in diameter and crystal clusters up to 15 cm in diameter.
