Plesiosaur Zarafasaura

Zarafasaura Oceanis, a member of the Elasmosauridae family, derives its name from the Arabic "Zarafa" (giraffe) combined with the Greek "Saurus" (lizard), while its species designation translates to "daughter of the sea." French paleontologist Dr. Peggy Vincent and her team at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris first described this remarkable marine reptile in 2011 based on incomplete cranial material recovered from Morocco. This formidable predator measured approximately 23 feet in length and inhabited ancient seas between 72 and 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. As a member of the broader Plesiosauridae lineage—which flourished for over 166 million years from the Triassic through the Late Cretaceous—Zarafasaura represents a distinct genus often conflated with other plesiosaurs in popular imagery and cryptozoological lore. This authentic fossil tooth preserved in its original matrix offers a tangible connection to the Mesozoic era's marine ecosystems.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be rough. Rarely does a fossil emerge fully intact and perfect. Most fossils require some restoration, and some are modified by humans to improve their appearance. Moroccan workers are highly skilled in discovering and conserving these natural treasures, though natural cracks often appear on the surface. These cracks are part of the fossil's natural charm and are not faults.
