Plesiosaur Zarafasaura

Zarafasaura Oceanis, a member of the Elasmosauridae family, derives its name from the Arabic "Zarafa" (giraffe) combined with the Greek "Saurus" (lizard)—its species name translates to "daughter of the sea." Paleontologist Dr. Peggy Vincent and her team at Paris's National Museum of Natural History first described this marine reptile in 2011 based on fragmentary cranial material recovered from Morocco. This formidable predator measured approximately 23 feet in length and inhabited ancient seas between 72 and 66 million years ago. Plesiosaurus represents merely one genus within the broader Plesiosauriae family, though popular culture frequently conflates these distinct lineages, often conflating them with cryptozoological legends. The plesiosaur lineage itself spanned from 228 million years ago through the Cretaceous period, with paleontologists cataloging 938 documented specimens to date.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be rough. Rarely does a fossil emerge fully intact and perfect. Most fossils require some restoration, and some are modified by humans to improve their appearance. Moroccan workers are highly skilled in discovering and conserving these natural treasures, though natural cracks often appear on the surface. These cracks are part of the fossil's natural charm and are not faults.
