Plesiosaur Zarafasaura

Zarafasaura oceanis was part of the Elasmosauridae, a family within the larger plesiosaur group known for its long neck and powerful flippers. The name Zarafasaura combines the Arabic word for giraffe with the Greek word for lizard, while the species name oceanis means “daughter of the sea.”

Discovered in Morocco and described in 2011 by Dr. Peggy Vincent, Zarafasaura grew to about 23 feet in length and lived during the Late Cretaceous. Plesiosaurs as a group existed from roughly 228 million to 61.6 million years ago, occupied marine environments worldwide, and were carnivorous. Popular artwork often blends different plesiosaur types and is influenced by legendary creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster, contributing to public fascination with these ancient marine reptiles.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be rough. Rarely does a fossil emerge fully intact and perfect. Most fossils require some restoration, and some are modified by humans to improve their appearance. Moroccan workers are highly skilled in discovering and conserving these natural treasures, though natural cracks often appear on the surface. These cracks are part of the fossil's natural charm and are not faults.
