Moldavite represents a remarkable intersection of cosmic and terrestrial geology—a tektite born from the catastrophic Ries crater impact in Bavaria. When the meteorite collided with Earth's surface, the resulting vaporization and ejection of molten material created this distinctive natural glass. As the superheated substance cooled during atmospheric descent, moldavite crystallized into its characteristic form. The finest specimens originate from Bohemia's Vltava River deposits, distinguished by their captivating green hues ranging from pale olive to rich forest tones. These colors derive from trace iron and elemental inclusions present during formation. Moldavite's defining characteristics include a vitreous luster and varied surface textures—from polished smoothness to intricate pitting and etching. With a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, it remains softer than traditional gemstones, yet its extraterrestrial provenance and geological significance make it a prized specimen for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

One notable feature of moldavite is its low density compared to other minerals; this characteristic allows for easy identification when weighed against similar-sized stones. Additionally, moldavite often displays inclusions or bubbles within its structure due to its rapid cooling process during formation.
