Corythosaurus was a plant-eating, “duck-billed” dinosaur belonging to the hadrosaurid family. It lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, approximately 80–74 million years ago, within the Campanian stage of the Mesozoic Era. Its jaws contained hundreds of tiny, interlocking teeth designed to grind vegetation efficiently.
One of the most recognizable features of Corythosaurus was the large bony crest on its head, which enclosed part of the nasal passage. Scientists believe this crest could have acted as a resonating chamber, helping the dinosaur produce sounds for communication. Corythosaurus also had a long, strong tail and an estimated body weight of three to five tons.
The first known fossils of Corythosaurus were uncovered in the Judith River Formation, a geological region stretching from Alberta, Canada, into Montana, USA. The species was formally described in 1914.
