Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most recognizable and sought-after fossils, famous for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells. These fascinating marine animals inhabited Earth’s oceans from around 240 to 65 million years ago, before becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs.
The name ammonite comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resembled their spiral shells. Ammonites were cephalopods, a group of marine predators that includes their modern relatives — the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.
