Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are some of the most recognizable fossils in the world, famous for their beautiful, ribbed, spiral shells. These marine animals lived in the oceans between 240 and 65 million years ago and vanished along with the dinosaurs.
Their name comes from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resembled their shells. Ammonites were cephalopods—a group that also includes modern octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses.
Graceful swimmers and skillful hunters, ammonites once thrived in ancient seas, leaving behind the stunning fossils we find today.
