Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most well-documented fossilized marine invertebrates, distinguished by their coiled, planispiral shells typically ornamented with ribs and intricate suture patterns. These cephalopods thrived in marine environments from approximately 240 to 65 million years ago, spanning the Triassic to Cretaceous periods, before becoming extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. The term ammonite is derived from the Greek ram-horned deity Ammon, referencing the resemblance of their shells to coiled horns. Belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea within the class Cephalopoda, ammonites are closely related to modern cephalopods such as squids, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses.
