Clypeaster altus Sea Urchins are marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly all major oceanic habitats—from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, this group boasts a rich and extensive fossil record dating back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid derives from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and aided in movement along the sea floor.
