Clypeaster altus Sea Urchins belong to a diverse group of marine invertebrates that inhabit nearly all major marine environments—from the poles to the equator and from shallow coastal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are around 800 living species today, and this group has an extensive fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid originates from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these sea urchins were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and mobility along the seafloor.
