Acanthoceras Ammonite

Ammonoids were fascinating sea creatures that lived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods, dominating ancient oceans for millions of years. These extinct marine cephalopods are best known for their coiled shells, shaped like a ram’s horn—a design that inspired their name from the Egyptian god Amun (or Ammon), who was depicted with ram’s horns. While Ammonoids resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are actually octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. Beautiful and scientifically significant, Ammonoid fossils reveal the remarkable diversity and evolution of Earth’s prehistoric marine life.

Ammonoid shells were intricately designed, featuring multiple internal chambers separated by thin walls known as septa. Where these septa met the outer shell, they formed distinct suture patterns, which are key to classifying different Ammonoid species. Early forms, called Goniatites, displayed a simple zigzag or “Goniatitic” suture pattern with smooth lobes and saddles. In contrast, later Ammonites developed complex, fern-like suture designs, showcasing their evolutionary advancement and natural beauty. These stunning patterns make Ammonoid fossils both scientifically valuable and visually captivating to collectors and paleontologists.
