Celestite (also called Celestine) is a mineral composed of strontium sulfate, named for its delicate blue coloration. It occurs in crystal form as well as in compact, massive, and fibrous varieties. Celestite is typically found in sedimentary rocks, often associated with gypsum, anhydrite, and halite, and occurs worldwide, usually in small quantities. Pale blue crystal specimens are particularly notable from Madagascar.

The famous Madagascar locality, discovered in 1967, produces roughly 15 tons annually. Situated near the village of Sakoany on the western banks of the Betsiboka River, the celestine-bearing layer forms a lens up to 30 meters thick, sandwiched between crinoidal limestones and sandy greywacke dating to the end of the Cretaceous. Mining involves digging shafts up to 15 meters (50 feet) deep to reach the deposits. The celestite is primarily found in two forms: geodes up to 60 cm in diameter and crystal clusters up to 15 cm in diameter.
