Lived in the Oligocene Age, 46-16 Million Years Ago
Oreodont Merycoidodon was an extinct herbivorous artiodactyl from the family Merycoidodontidae that lived in North America during the Middle Eocene to Middle Miocene (roughly 46-16 million years ago). Known as “hillock teeth," this species had a body size comparable to a modern sheep and short limbs. Its elongated skull featured a pit in front of the eyes, which may have held a scent gland for territory marking. Merycoidodon’s molars were suited for grinding tough plants, and it possessed strong canines. Fossils have been found in various North American sites, including South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.
