Corythosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur belonging to the hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” family. It lived during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, roughly 80–74 million years ago. One of its most distinctive features was a tall, helmet-like bony crest on its head. This crest housed part of the nasal passage and was likely used to produce calls or resonant sounds for communication.
To handle its leafy diet, Corythosaurus had rows of tightly packed teeth at the back of its mouth that worked together to grind vegetation efficiently. The dinosaur also had a long, muscular tail for balance, and adults are estimated to have weighed between three and five tons.
The first remains of this species were recovered from the Judith River Formation, which spans areas of modern-day Alberta in Canada and Montana in the United States. Paleontologists officially described Corythosaurus in 1914.
