Name: Corythosaurus

Type: Herbivore

Size: 9 meters in length.

Corythosaurus was a hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” dinosaur that lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, roughly 80–74 million years ago, within the Campanian age of the Mesozoic Era. As a herbivore, it relied on hundreds of tightly packed teeth located deep in its jaws to grind and break down tough plant material.

One of the most notable traits of Corythosaurus was the large, domed crest on its skull. This structure enclosed part of the nasal passage, and researchers believe it may have played a role in amplifying sounds, possibly helping with communication or display behaviors. The dinosaur also carried a long, heavy tail for balance and locomotion, and adults are estimated to have weighed between three and five tons.

The first Corythosaurus fossils were discovered in the Judith River Formation, a famous fossil-bearing region that stretches from Alberta, Canada, into Montana, USA. The genus was officially named and described in 1914, providing an important addition to our understanding of hadrosaur evolution.
