The Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was a large prehistoric mammal that lived across Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, surviving until the end of the last Ice Age. As a key member of the Pleistocene megafauna, it was well adapted to cold environments, sporting a thick coat of fur and a heavy shoulder hump that helped it endure harsh glacial conditions.
Adults typically measured between 9.8 and 12.5 feet in length and weighed roughly 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. The species is easily recognised by its long, curved front horn, which may have been used for clearing snow, defending against predators, and social displays. Woolly rhinoceroses were herbivores, grazing on tough grasses and vegetation that covered the Ice Age steppe-tundra.
The species went extinct around 14,000 years ago, likely due to a combination of climate warming and the loss of its open, grass-dominated habitat. Despite their disappearance, fossils and cave art continue to provide valuable insight into the life and environment of this remarkable Ice Age giant.
