Basilosaurus was a prehistoric whale that lived about 40 to 34 million years ago during the Late Eocene Period. It was first discovered in the 19th century in the United States, and because of its long, serpentine body, early scientists mistakenly thought it was a giant marine reptile. This led to its name, Basilosaurus, meaning “king lizard”, which remains even though it was later confirmed to be a whale.

This ancient whale was truly massive—growing up to 70 feet long and weighing around 15 tons. To put that into perspective, it was longer than a modern semi-trailer and as heavy as the anchor of a large cruise ship. Its long, streamlined body and powerful tail made it a strong swimmer, perfectly adapted to life in the open sea.

Basilosaurus was a carnivore, equipped with sharp, interlocking teeth and a strong jaw designed for tearing into prey. Studies of its skull and jaws reveal that it had an impressive bite force of about 2,300 pounds. This tremendous power helped it hunt effectively, preying on large fish, smaller whales, and likely anything else it could catch in its prehistoric waters.

As one of the earliest fully aquatic whales, Basilosaurus represents an important step in whale evolution—a powerful predator that ruled the ancient seas long before modern whales appeared.
