Acanthoceras Ammonite

Ammonoids were an extinct group of marine cephalopods that thrived in the oceans from the Devonian through the Cretaceous periods. Their distinctively coiled shells, shaped like a ram’s horn, inspired their name—derived from the Egyptian god Amun (or Ammon), who was depicted with ram’s horns. Although Ammonoids resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are actually octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. These ancient sea creatures are among the most iconic and scientifically valuable fossils, offering insight into the evolution and diversity of prehistoric marine life.

Ammonoid shells were highly intricate, divided into multiple chambers by thin walls known as septa. The points where these septa connected to the outer shell formed unique suture patterns, which scientists use to classify different Ammonoid species. Early forms, known as Goniatites, featured a simple zigzag or “Goniatitic” suture pattern with smooth lobes and saddles. In contrast, later Ammonites developed complex, fern-like suture designs, showcasing their evolutionary advancement and striking natural beauty. These patterns make Ammonoid fossils not only scientifically significant but also highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
