The Woolly Rhinoceros was an extinct species of rhinoceros that once roamed widely across Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. Thriving in the cold, open steppe-tundra environments of the Ice Age, it survived until the close of the last glacial period. As one of the most iconic members of the Pleistocene megafauna, the woolly rhino was well adapted to harsh climates, sporting a thick coat of insulating fur, a robust body, and a large, forward-curving horn that may have been used for clearing snow to reach vegetation.
Adult woolly rhinos were impressive in size, typically measuring between 9.8 and 12.5 feet in length. Their weight ranged from approximately 4,000 to 6,000 pounds, making them one of the largest herbivores of their environment. These powerful animals likely grazed on grasses and low-lying plants, which dominated the Ice Age landscapes they inhabited.
