Goniatite Ammonite
Ammonoids were a diverse group of marine cephalopods that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods. Their name is inspired by the distinctive coiled shells resembling the ram’s horns associated with the Egyptian god Amun or Ammon. Although visually similar to modern Nautiloids, ammonoids are more closely related to octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells were sectioned into chambers by internal walls called septa, and the junctions between septa and the shell exterior formed intricate suture patterns crucial for classification. Early Goniatites display a smooth zigzag “Goniatitic” pattern, while later ammonites feature more complex, fern-like sutures that reveal their evolutionary progression.
