Goniatite Ammonite

Ammonoids were marine cephalopods that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods. Their name originates from the distinctive "ram’s horn" shape of their shells, reminiscent of the Egyptian god Amun, often depicted with ram’s horns. Though they resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are likely octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish. Their shells were sectioned into chambers by septa, whose attachments to the shell’s exterior formed suture patterns essential for classification. Early Goniatites are marked by smooth-lobed zigzag “Goniatitic” sutures, while later Ammonites display more complex, fern-like designs.
