Acanthoceras Ammonite

Ammonoids were fascinating prehistoric sea creatures that lived from the Devonian through the Cretaceous periods, thriving in Earth’s ancient oceans. These extinct marine cephalopods had tightly coiled shells shaped like a ram’s horn, which inspired their name—taken from the Egyptian god Amun (or Ammon), known for his ram’s horns. Although Ammonoids resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are actually octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.

Their shells featured internal chambers divided by thin walls called septa, and the connections between the septa and the outer shell created striking suture patterns. These patterns serve as a key tool for classifying Ammonoids. Early Goniatites had simple zigzag suture lines, while later Ammonites developed beautifully detailed, fern-like patterns. Both scientifically valuable and visually stunning, Ammonoid fossils reveal the incredible artistry and evolution of ancient marine life.
