Goniatite Ammonite
Ammonoids, marine cephalopods that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods, derive their name from the distinctive "ram’s horn" shape of their shells, reminiscent of the Egyptian god Amun’s horns. Although they resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest extant relatives are likely octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells consist of chambers separated by septa, whose intersections with the shell surface form suture patterns critical for taxonomic classification. The early Goniatites exhibit a characteristic "Goniatitic" zigzag suture pattern with smooth lobes and saddles, while later Ammonites display more complex, fern-like sutures.
