Early Miocene, 5-11 million years old

Hastalis Mako, also known as Isurus Hastalis, is a species of mako shark that lived during the Miocene epoch, approximately 11-5 million years ago. It was a large, fast-swimming predator that could grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) in length and had a sleek body and pointed snout with sharp teeth. Hastalis is known from fossil remains found in various locations around the world, including the United States, Europe, and South America. It is believed to have been a dominant predator in the open ocean, feeding on a variety of prey such as fish, squid, and marine mammals.

The teeth of Hastalis closely resemble those of modern mako sharks, but they are notably larger and more robust, reflecting its strength as a predator. While the species was once classified within the Isurus genus, further study of its distinct features has led to its reclassification under a separate genus. This shark plays a key role in understanding the evolutionary history and diversity of ancient sharks, offering valuable insights into how marine predators adapted over time and shaped the ecological balance of ancient oceans.
