Ocean Jasper is a vibrant, multicolored stone sourced from Madagascar, known for its distinctive spherical, orb-like patterns. While often referred to as an orbicular jasper, recent studies indicate that it is primarily composed of chalcedony. Some specimens feature agate banding or drusy coatings of tiny clear quartz crystals, commonly known as “druzy.” Ocean Jasper is highly prized by collectors and jewelry makers for its unique patterns, rich colors, and captivating textures.
Chalcedony, a quartz variety, is widely unrecognized despite being the source of several semi-precious stones: banded chalcedony appears as agate, the red form as carnelian, and the black as onyx. Ocean Jasper uniquely exhibits light transmission, a hallmark of chalcedony. Typically, Jasper is opaque, only becoming translucent when sliced very thinly.
