The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a rare and remarkable living fossil tree, with a lineage dating back over 100 million years to the Mesozoic Era. Fossil records indicate that Metasequoia once thrived across prehistoric forests in Asia, Europe, and North America, forming dense, humid ecosystems alongside dinosaurs.
For centuries, this ancient conifer was known only from fossil specimens and thought extinct, earning the nickname “fossil tree.” That changed in 1944, when living Dawn Redwoods were discovered in central China, revealing the survival of this prehistoric genus. Both fossil and modern trees are deciduous conifers, shedding needles seasonally, a rare trait among cone-bearing plants.
Modern Dawn Redwoods grow rapidly into tall, straight trunks with elegant pyramidal crowns, often reaching 120 feet. Fossil Metasequoia specimens offer insight into prehistoric forests, ancient climates, and plant evolution, making them highly valued by collectors, educators, and museums.
