Goniatite Ammonite
Ammonoids were marine organisms that thrived from the Devonian through the Cretaceous periods. Their name originates from the distinctive "ram's horn" shape of their shells, linked to the Egyptian deity Amun, who was often depicted with ram's horns. Although they resemble modern Nautiloids, ammonoids are more closely related to octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells were segmented into chambers by septa, and the septal attachments to the shell exterior produced suture patterns essential for ammonoid classification. The early Goniatites exhibit a "Goniatitic" zigzag pattern with smooth lobes and saddles, while subsequent ammonites developed more complex, fern-like sutures.
