Agate describes many types of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz family mineral. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, the location of the first Agate discoveries. Often displaying layered bands or stripes, some agates contain "eye" patterns or color spots, fossilized inclusions, or appear solid. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands appear in almost every color found in nature, including a transparent variety.
Agate, unearthed alongside Neolithic relics, has a rich history as both a healing amulet and ornamental stone dating back to ancient Babylon. Its therapeutic significance endured through the civilizations of Greece and Egypt and disseminated across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This distinguished mineral also gave rise to an acclaimed stone cutting and polishing craft in Germany, which prospered from the 15th to the 19th century and continues to thrive today.
