Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

Otodus chubutensis was an extinct shark species from the Eocene epoch, around 56 to 46 million years ago. It was a large predator, reaching up to 10 meters (33 feet) in length, with a sturdy build, a broad head, and large, sharp teeth. Fossil remains of Otodus chubutensis have been discovered in various parts of the world, including the United States, Europe, and South America. Notably, it was first described from fossils found in Chubut Province, Argentina, giving it its name.

Like other ancient sharks, Otodus chubutensis probably preyed on fish, marine mammals, and other sharks. Its teeth indicate it was a powerful hunter capable of capturing sizable prey. Overall, this species provides valuable insight into the evolution and diversity of prehistoric sharks, as well as the predator-prey dynamics in ancient marine ecosystems.
