Epidote is a mineral belonging to the sorosilicate group, commonly found in metamorphic rocks. Its chemical formula is Ca₂(Al, Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH). Epidote typically forms elongated prismatic crystals and ranges in color from yellow-green to black, with its distinctive pistachio-green hue being most characteristic. It has a vitreous luster and is often found in association with quartz, feldspar, and amphibole.
Epidote has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively durable mineral. Its appealing color and vitreous luster make it a popular choice for use as a gemstone and in jewelry making. Beyond ornamental purposes, epidote also finds application in the manufacture of ceramics and serves as a minor ore of iron.
