Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites were ancient marine mollusks easily recognized by their spiraled, ribbed shells, which have become some of the most iconic fossils on Earth. They thrived in the world’s oceans between 240 and 65 million years ago, before disappearing during the same mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. The name ammonite comes from the Greek god Ammon, who was often depicted with curved ram’s horns resembling their coiled shells. Belonging to the cephalopod family, ammonites were distant relatives of modern squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses.
