Hemisaurida fish, dating back approximately 100 million years from the Cretaceous period, are part of Lebanon's renowned limestone fossil deposits. The Cretaceous limestone formations in Lebanon are famous for their diverse fauna, with fossils similar to those from Solnhofen in Germany, often matching the color of the surrounding limestone matrix. These fossils originate from the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, around 100 million years ago. The limestone deposits at Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel are especially noted for their exceptional preservation of fossil fish and various other well-preserved invertebrates such as shrimp and lobsters.
