Late Cretaceous through to the Eocene, 100 million to 50 million years ago
Commonly known as the Saber-toothed herring, Enchodus is more closely related to salmon than to herrings. Its sharp teeth were ideal for capturing small, slippery prey such as fish and cephalopods like squid, set within a wide-opening mouth. These traits indicate that while the teeth were effective for seizing prey, they were not suited to tearing off smaller pieces. Instead, after impaling its prey, Enchodus likely used rapid jaw movements to manipulate and process its catch.
