Otodus sharks were larger than any carnivorous fish alive today, growing up to one and a half times bigger than the largest recorded great white shark. Despite its massive size, Otodus was not the sole apex predator of its time, as it shared the seas with other giants such as Basilosaurus, an 18-meter-long predatory whale that resembled an ancient mosasaur. Even so, Otodus remained a dominant predator, capable of holding its ground against nearly all rivals in its ecosystem.
