Agate refers to many types of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz mineral. Its name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first identified. Characterized by layered bands, some agates display “eye” patterns, color spots, fossil inclusions, or solid coloration. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric layers occur in almost every natural color, including transparent forms. Historically, agate has accompanied Neolithic artifacts and served as healing charms and decoration since Babylonian times. Its medicinal and ornamental importance extended through ancient Greek, Egyptian, African, Middle Eastern, and Russian cultures. Agate also inspired a prominent stone-cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th century onward, still thriving today.
