Oligocene Age 33 - 23 million years ago

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is a prehistoric deciduous conifer that has survived since the age of dinosaurs, making it a remarkable living fossil. Fossil evidence shows it was widespread across Asia, Europe, and North America, forming lush forests millions of years ago.

For centuries, Metasequoia was known only from fossilized leaves, cones, and wood, until 1944, when living specimens were discovered in central China. Fossil and modern trees are deciduous, shedding needles seasonally, a rare trait among conifers.

Modern Dawn Redwoods grow rapidly into tall, pyramidal trees up to 120 feet, and fossil specimens provide invaluable insight into prehistoric forests, ancient climates, and plant evolution. These fossils are highly valued by collectors, paleobotany enthusiasts, educators, and museums as a direct link to Earth’s deep botanical history.
