Galena is the most prevalent mineral containing lead and has been recognized throughout history. It commonly forms well-defined crystals in a variety of unique shapes. Some crystals are cubic with edges trimmed by partial octahedral growth, while others are octahedral with flattened points due to cubic development. Many specimens display forms between cubic and octahedral, and some octahedral or cubic-octahedral crystals exhibit dodecahedral growth, creating unusual and fascinating shapes.

Galena is a primary mineral, serving as the source for most lead-containing minerals like Cerussite and Anglesite, which form as secondary minerals derived from it. Structural impurities such as silver and bismuth influence Galena’s cleavage behavior. Specifically, the presence of bismuth can result in octahedral cleavage patterns, while silver may lead to cleavage fragments that are flaky and slightly curved.
