Fulgurite is a type of natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or sand dunes, creating a striking geological phenomenon. The extreme heat from the lightning fuses the sand grains, producing tubes or branching structures. This formation is also referred to as petrified lightning, fossilized lightning, or lightning rock.

One notable location for fulgurites is the Sahara Desert in Morocco, where the vast sandy terrain and frequent thunderstorms create ideal conditions for their formation. Fulgurites can vary in size, ranging from small, delicate tubes to larger, intricate branching patterns.

Fulgurites form mostly from silica, the main ingredient in sand. When lightning hits the earth, it can heat the sand to an intense 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit), instantly melting and bonding it. This process creates fulgurites that capture the original shape and detail of the sand grains, offering a fascinating natural record of a lightning strike.
