Fulgurite is a type of natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or sand dunes, creating a striking geological phenomenon. The intense heat generated by a lightning bolt fuses the sand grains, producing fulgurite in the form of tubes or branching structures. It is also referred to as petrified lightning, fossilized lightning, or lightning rock.
The Sahara Desert in Morocco is one of the regions where fulgurites can be found. The desert’s vast sandy expanses and frequent thunderstorms create ideal conditions for their formation. Fulgurites can range in size from small, delicate tubes to larger, more intricate branching patterns.
Composed primarily of silica—the main component of sand—fulgurites form when lightning raises temperatures to as high as 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit), melting and rapidly fusing the sand. The resulting structures preserve the shape and texture of the surrounding sand grains, capturing a moment of nature’s extraordinary power.
