Fulgurite is a type of natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or dunes, fusing the sand grains and creating unique tubular or branching structures. Also known as petrified lightning, fossilized lightning, or lightning rock, fulgurites capture the sudden energy of a lightning strike in solid form.

The Sahara Desert in Morocco is an ideal location for fulgurites, with its vast sandy expanses and frequent thunderstorms. Sizes range from delicate small tubes to large, intricate branches.

Composed primarily of silica, fulgurites form when lightning heats the sand to temperatures up to 30,000 °C (54,000 °F), rapidly melting and fusing the grains.
