Horned Horned  Trilobite

Trilobites are an extinct group of fossil marine arthropods classified under the class Trilobita. They represent one of the earliest known arthropod groups in the fossil record. The first appearance of trilobites marks the beginning of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period, approximately 521 million years ago. These hard-shelled, segmented animals lived in Earth’s ancient oceans and are regarded as some of the earliest complex life forms on the planet. Trilobites are a defining and characteristic fossil group of the Paleozoic Era and became extinct long before dinosaurs appeared.

Trilobites were among the first animals to develop a true exoskeleton, which greatly increased their likelihood of fossil preservation. Their rigid shell is divided lengthwise into three distinct lobes, giving rise to the name trilobite, meaning “three-lobed.” These include a raised central axial lobe and two symmetrical pleural lobes on either side.

The trilobite body is organized into three main anatomical regions. The cephalon (head) contains compound eyes, mouthparts, and sensory structures such as antennae. The thorax forms the central portion of the body and consists of multiple articulated segments, ranging from 2 to 61, allowing flexibility and movement. The pygidium (tail) is the posterior section, where the segments are fused into a single, stable structure.

Because of their durable exoskeletons and long geological range, trilobites are among the most abundant and scientifically important fossils, widely used to study early evolution and ancient marine environments.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job, unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are commonly visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
